Postoperative pain management is an integral component of a patient's overall recovery from surgery.
Satisfactory pain management following surgery is usually achieved through the use of systemic narcotic analgesics which can have several unfavourable side effects.
For that reason, direct instillation of local anaesthetics into operative sites has been proposed as a pain management method to decrease the need for oral or intravenous postoperative narcotics. Local anaesthetics can be administered by an infusion pump directly into the surgical site.
